School guard killed in ‘NPA’ ambush

A SCHOOL guard was gunned down by suspected members of New People’s Army (NPA) at Barangay Bantayan in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental Wednesday morning, May 23.

Killed was Rodolfo Ambong, 48, of the said village. He was a former village watchman.

Superintendent Rhea Santos, city police chief, said Ambong was riding a motorcycle on his way home around 6:45 a.m. when four unidentified armed men blocked his way and fired at him.

Ambong succumbed to 11 gunshot wounds.

Santos said the assailants, who allegedly introduced themselves as NPA, fled while they continued to fire.

Santos also said that they received information that a group of armed men was positioned in a nearby area, on the way to the mountain.

Police recovered from the scene fired cartridges of .45 caliber pistol and .9mm caliber.

Santos said Ambong has a previous murder case which was already dismissed.

Despite the alleged claim of the perpetrators that they were NPA, Santos said it is still subject to verification.

Santos said there are no witnesses that can testify about the incident due to fear.

Police have yet to determine the motive of the incident.
