Confab highlights writing local languages

EDUCATORS are being equipped to create an indigenized language curriculum for better learning.

Project Team Leader Benguet State University College of Humanities instructor Samuel Poliden said the workshop on grammar writing on native languages in the region is a step toward quality education.

"The participants are to internalize the structure of the local languages, material culture and its contribution to overall instructional quality and on making every learning plan outcome based," he said.

The five-day event specifically focuses on five languages considered as

native language in the region: Ibaloi, Kalanguya, Kankana-ey, Karao and Bontoc.

Poliden said at least 40 participants, all native speakers and comprised of elementary to college teachers, trained to localize and indigenize the language curriculum according to the particularities of the grammar and culture of their indigenous communities.

The workshop, funded by the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) and Innovation Grant, was titled Language Bank of Cordillera. It was held on May 21-26 in Baguio City and aimed to aid the Mother Tongue Based- Multilingual Education and the K-12 programs of the government.

Poliden said they are eyeing to continue the workshop in the province of Apayao and parts of the Cordillera region. The final outputs of the teachers will be displayed to libraries and distributed to Ched.

The workshop seeks to gather enough cadres who will be in the forefront of developing languages starting with grammar.
