‘Exempt us from paying excise tax’

SEVERAL transport groups in Cebu want President Rodrigo Duterte to exempt them from paying excise tax on petroleum products.

Ryan Benjamin Yu, chairman of the Cebu Integrated Transport Cooperative (Citrasco), said all transport groups in the country will unite to come up next month with a manifesto that they want public utility vehicles (PUVs) exempted from giving excise tax.

Yu said he is now coordinating with transport group leaders from other region so they will come up with a united stand on the issue on increasing prices of petroleum products.

“Kining paggamit sa mga public utility vehicle dili ni for personal namo. Nagdagan ni sa dan for public use, maserbisyohan ang mga pasahero (PUVs serve the public, they’re not for us, they’re for the passengers),” Yu said.

They will also back the call to suspend the implementation of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (Train) 1 Law if the price of a barrel of petroleum reaches $80, he said.

Other than coming up with a manifesto, the transport groups will also ask senators and House representatives to make amendments to the Train 1 Law when it is implemented this year.

Last Tuesday, the price of a liter of gasoline increased by P1.60, while a liter of diesel was increased by P1.15, and P1 per liter of kerosene.

Meanwhile, Yu said they will no longer demand for an increase in fare for PUVs. (SCG)
