City wins golds in arnis, chess, boxing on last day

MANDAUE CITY -- Davao City collected at least five more gold medals in the final day of the Philippine National Games (PNG) 2018 as of Friday - three golds in arnis and one each in chess and boxing.

Jezebel Morcillo, a Cebu Pacific ticketing staff, and Adelfa Sagne, a teacher at the University of Mindanao, delivered golds in women's full contact featherweight and extralightweight divisions, respectively, as Glennon Jhon Malisa captured his third gold in junior boys full contact extralightweight event.

Malisa also won golds in anyo and padded stick events of the same weight category.

"Blessed kaayo ko sa Ginoo, pasalamat ko sa iyaha og sa mga teammates og support ni Master Mario na nag-train sa akoa para maabot nako ni nga level. Pasalamat ko sa akong pamilya na ginasuportahan ko nila (I am blessed by God and I am thankful. I also thank my team and Master Mario Palazuelo for training me to reach this level. I thank my family for always supporting me)," he said in an interview with SunStar Davao at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center here Friday.

Amena Madid and Flloyd Zabala also won golds as the arnis team also collected three silvers and three bronzes.

Blitz gold

Dabawenyo international master (IM) Oliver Dimakiling claimed his second PNG blitz gold at the Robinson's Galleria Friday, earning a total of 7.5 points in the nine-round format event.

The sixth-seeded ace bested seven-pointers Danny Maersk Mangao of Bacolod City and IM Haridas Pascua of Baguio City who clinched the silver and bronze, respectively.

Davao City's Fide master (FM) Austin Jacob Literatus finished sixth with 6.5 points.

Dimakiling, who hails from Sasa, and doting father to two kids, said in the vernacular, "I did not expect this win following my lapses in standard and rapid. I just enjoyed the game."

He dedicated his victory to his mother Pedrita who passed away last year.

"Everything I do from now on I dedicated first to my Mama," Dimakiling said.

Lone boxer

Davao City's one and only boxer in the PNG here, Junmilardo Ogayre of Maa, emerged champion in youth men's bantamweight after thrashing Cebu Province opponent Berland Robles via unanimous decision.

Ogayre, the sixth child among a brood of eight, said: "Proud and lipay ko nga nag gold ko diri sa unang PNG nako, para ni sa akong pamilya og sa akong syudad (I am proud and happy to had won a gold in my PNG debut, this is for my family and my city)."
