Carnival asks for extension

IF HE were to decide, Mayor Maurico Domogan said no extensions will be given the Belezar Ola carnival at the Children’s park.

The chief executive confirmed a request for extension has been filed by Ola. Under the original agreement, the carnival will operate only until the opening of classes next month.

Domogan said the matter is to be decided by the local council.

Vice Mayor Edison Bilog said his opposition to the operation of the carnival has not wavered.

“I am against it, malaki ng perwisyo ang binigay ng carnival na yan,” he said.

The vice mayor said the P50,000 bond paid by Ola is not enough to repair damage to the Children's park.

Bilog scoffed an extension is not needed saying the P500,000 lease representing 90 days to use the space paid by Ola would have brought him needed profit.

“Sobrang bawi na siya dyan. Dami ng reklamo diyan sa operation at yong ni required ng city engineers natin para sa safety ng mga tao ni hindi niya sinunod so bakit pa natin iextend,” he said.

Bilog said he will openly voice his opposition to the extension when it is tackled by the council before relinquishing his seat when the discussion begins for the issue.

The vice mayor stepped down as presiding officer each time the carnival issue was taken up.

The Ola carnival has been met with opposition since it started almost three months ago with allegations of gambling as well as unsafe rides.

City engineers have been deemed some rides unsafe and ordered Ola to cease operation to keep the riding public safe from accidents after reports of riders being stuck.

Domogan himself described the some rides as a living risk to the riding public but asked for calm on the clamor to close the carnival all together.

Weeks ago, Domogan admitted to never allow a carnival such as Ola’s to operate in the city and vowed to check all proposals thoroughly in the future.

Under the agreement with the city, the carnival will operate for 6o days set to expire when classes start by June, a lease price of P500,000 has been set with a 50, 000 bond paid to the city in case of damage to the park.

Councilor Elmer Datuin said the request of Ola has yet to be endorsed to a specific committee before any action is done by the city.
