SUNSTAR Bacolod won the Best in Environmental Reporting award in the daily category at the Philippine Press Institute 2017 Civic Journalism Community Press Awards held in Manila Friday night.
This is the second consecutive year for SunStar Bacolod to win a major award from PPI, a national association of newspapers.
In the previous year, SunStar Bacolod also won the Best in Business and Economic Reporting award.
“This achievement is very humbling. Oftentimes, we tend to ignore news about the environment as we are more interested in politics, entertainment, and drama,” said SunStar Bacolod editor-in-chief Marchel Espina.
“We will do our best to write more stories about the environment because this issue has a significant impact in our community,” she said.
We thanked PPI for this recognition, she added.
Other winners in the daily category were SunStar Davao, Best in Photojournalism and Best in Business and Economic Reporting; The Freeman, Best in Editorial Page; and Cebu Daily News, Best Edited Newspaper.
Winners in the weekly category were MetroPost, Best in Photojournalism; Baguio Midland Courier, Best in Environmental Reporting, Best in Editorial Page and Best Edited Newspaper; and BusinessWeek Mindanao, Best in Business and Economic Reporting.
Baguio Midland Courier was also the Hall of Fame awardee.
This year’s theme “Reclaiming the Value of Journalism: In an Era When Clickbait Is King.”
