Baumgart: SK Leaders

FINALLY, you’re elected.

After days of active campaigning and weeks of planning and developing platforms—which, hopefully, are strong, well thought out, and address the needs of your constituents—you are finally elected.

You are the first Sangguniang Kabataan chair or councilor in the longest time. We’ve all been waiting for leaders like you to finally take office and actively engage young people in your locality.

We have high hopes for you. We’re excited what you are able to deliver and bring to your barangay. We’re excited to learn more about your programs and take part in the activities.

You’ll stay true to your path and will not be swayed by corruption and temptation. Others may see your office as a way of gaining more power or money, but you will remain honest.

You will serve your community with passion and purpose. Strong love for country and your dedication towards nation-building will guide you and fuel you as you develop more programs for the youth.

Your programs will be different. They will be well thought out and designed based on the needs of the constituents of your barangay. You will not just run “canned programs” of sports and dance tournaments—yours will be different.

Go and think of partners. Remember you cannot do things on your own. Find support in other organizations and partners who support your cause. There are more people out there just like you who have the passion to serve.

But remember to stay away from people who influence you badly. Others with bad intentions will try to prey on you, seeing you as a vulnerable little lamb who they can exploit. Stay away from the baddies and kick them where the sun does not shine.

Remember that you’re taking the lead in developing programs for the youth in your community. No one is getting anything through you and your programs for their personal gain.

Keep an eye out for anomalies and always know what you are signing and getting into. Let the truth be a strong foundation of your organization and yourself.

Protect this special office. Others may not exploit this office and you definitely should not either. Don’t make this your time to exploit, steal, and give this institution a bad name. Do not destroy and abuse the trust we placed in you.

Finally, we get young leaders such as yourself to serve and lead. This is your time to work with others, serve others, and more importantly, be a man and woman for others.

It’s time to put other people’s needs first.

It’s your time to be a servant leader—a servant to others.

We trust you.
