Barlig hosts Mt. Amuyao climbathon

BONTOC, Mountain Province -- As part of the Fortan Festival, the municipality is set to host the first Mount Amuyao Climbathon in coordination with Tawid Multisport Group slated June 17.

The activity aims to promote the culture and tradition, and the tourist spots of Barlig, most especially Mount Amuyao, the highest mountain peak in the province and among the ten in the Philippines.

“Climbing vertical trails is one of the toughest mountain races in the world which includes the showmanship of strength of upper and lower extremities, stamina, endurance, and the ability to adopt from the humidity of the vertical trail”, states the proposal of activity.

The activity is also one way of introducing climbathon and trail running to local athletes and promote eco and sports tourism and healthy lifestyle among the local runners and tourists.

It will also be an opportunity for adventure hikers who would want to tests their endurance as they experience future trail running and mountain hiking.

The event will kick off at Poblacion at 6 a.m. and finishes at Mount Amuyao summit.

Registration started in April and will end up on June 17 which is open to international, national and local athletes.

Jessa Valdez Jr., municipal tourism action officer of Barlig, said the climbathon is a test of endurance and a measure of time to take going up to the summit.

Aqueles Agnapan, one of the organizers said close to 150 runners are expected to join the event coming from Manila and Baguio City.

“We can’t really be sure of the final number of participants as the Baguio registration is still ongoing”, he said. (Roger Sacyaten)
