Apple orders Abrams series

APPLE is ordering a comedy-drama series from J.J. Abrams that will feature original music by Sara Bareilles.

“Little Voice” is described by Apple as a romantic tale of searching for one’s true voice as a young adult. According to Variety, the series explores the universal journey of finding one’s authentic voice in his early 20s.

It will be written by Jessie Nelson, who is also among the executive producers of the series. His screenwriting credits include “I Am Sam” and “Stepmom,” both tearjerkers—the former starring Sean Penn and a very young Dakota Fanning while the latter starred Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris.

The series is produced by Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Abrams and Bareilles will executive produce along with Bad Robot’s Ben Stephenson and Nelson.

“Little Voice” received a 10-episode order, Apple said Wednesday. The cast and the release date were not announced.

Abrams’ repertoire is quite eclectic from big science-fiction projects like “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Lost” to a drama like “Felicity.”

The Grammy-nominated Bareilles earned a Tony Award bid last year for her music for “Waitress.”

Apple is reportedly spending around $1 billion this year for original TV content. The content will largely be produced this year with release dates scheduled for 2019.

In 2017, Apple released “Carpool Karaoke: The Series,” based on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke. In the show, a pair of celebrities will ride around the city singing songs.

Apple also released “Planet of the Apps,” which is a show where people pitch their proposed apps to celebrity judges Jessica Alba, will.i.am and Gwyneth Paltrow, who are also entrepreneurs. Completing the panel is businessman Gary Vaynerchuk. The series received a lukewarm reception. (AP)
