Oro’s Uy, Treseño rule 15th FDG Badminton Cup

CAGAYAN de Oro’s Jason Uy and Warren Thomas Treseño of Team Westin ruled the 15th FDG Badminton Cup doubles elite division on Sunday, June 10, held at Upper Deck, Julia Vargas in Ortigas City.

Uy, a 35-year-old businessman, and his 21-year-old partner Treseño sealed the title after defeating their foes from Tuguegarao City in the final.

The duo of Uy and Treseño did not give a single set after beating their final foes in two straight sets, 21-14 and 21-18.

On their way to the final, they finished clean in the elimination round with a 3-0 win-loss card and won the crossover to move in the final.

They brought the banner of Team Shuttle Square, which is among the known shuttle gym in the city situated at Barangay Gusa.

Jude Uy, Jason’s elder brother, and his veteran teammate Michael Valerio fell short and settled second place in the class A doubles.

The 42-year-old Jude and Valerio, 44, also swept their games in the elimination round including the crossover phase, but lost to the pair of Manuel Mendoza and Adrian Alto in the final and deciding third set.

In consolation, Jude and Valerio drew first blood with a 21-16 victory in the first set.

Mendoza and Alto refused to bow down as they bounced back in the second set with a 21-14 win to force a decider.

Luck did not favor Uy and Valerio as their final opponents outlasted them in the rubber match via 21-16.

“Medyo bagal na among mga tuhod ug ako ra manoy sa team, but we are happy nga niaway mi sa final with Jude,” said Valerio, who was among the top Oro netters in his prime.
