REP. Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas (Cebu, 1st) welcomed the plan of former Talisay City mayor Johnny “JVR” delos Reyes to run against him in Talisay’s mayoral race next year.
The 33-year-old grandson of Mayor Eduardo Gullas said he considers the former mayor a “formidable opponent.”
“Since he was the man who defeated my grandfather, I consider him formidable,” the younger Gullas said.
Rep. Gullas said he expects that next year’s elections will be a challenging one with Delos Reyes running against him.
He has announced his plan to run for city mayor while his grandfather will run for congressman, taking his place.
Gullas said he decided to run for mayor as his grandfather plans to retire before the 2022 national elections.
Vice Mayor Alan Bucao plans to seek reelection with Gullas.
The congressman said they are looking for two more candidates to complete their slate since City Councilors Valeriano Ylanan and Richard Francis Aznar are already on their third and final term.
For his part, Delos Reyes, who was mayor from 2013 to 2016, said some supporters convinced him to run and he decided to do so after a national party wooed him to be its mayoral bet in Talisay.
But unlike Gullas whose slate is nearly complete, Delos Reyes has yet to pick his candidates for councilor. (JKV)
