Ilonggos are advised to keep mosquitoes away as Department of Health (DOH) observes Dengue Awareness Month at the start of rainy season with the theme “Kung Wala Lamok, Wala Dengue.”

DOH recorded 90 dengue cases with 0 death in Iloilo City as of June 2, 2018.

Aedes aegypti mosquito does not only carry and spread dengue virus but also Chikungunya and Zika viruses, DOH-Western Visayas Medical Officer Dr. Rose Marie Lamirez said.

The most effective way to prevent dengue is to observe 4S Strategies which stand for Search & destroy mosquito breeding places; use Self-protection measures; Seek early consultation for fever lasting more than 2 days; and Say No to indiscriminate fogging.

“In order to avoid and prevent dengue, we should turn upside down empty storage containers and remove water from flower vases. We should be vigilant when it comes to the symptoms: if there’s a fever, consult a doctor to know if it is dengue. Wear long sleeve shirts if possible. We should also clean the surroundings especially the dark corners of houses,” Lamirez said. (PR)
