Bzzzzz: Only one priest killed in Cebu; will Ouanos return?

IN TALISAY. Two recorded publicized deaths of priests in Cebu in the last nine years or so involved a robbery-killing on a stretch of road along South Road Properties in Talisay City and a medical incident in a Cebu City motel.

Only one case of violence: Fr. Jovencio Rabusa was robbed and shot dead while he was strolling on a lonely part of SRP last July 6, 2009. The culprits were arrested.

The other case was the finding of the body of Fr. Alexander Salve last April 14, 2010 in the room of an inn at Manalili and Balintawak Sts., Cebu City. It became a police case and landed in the papers even as the archdiocese asked for an investigation. It turned out he had a heart problem and, no, he had no companion when he checked into the motel.

Why alarming

COINCIDENCE. The death elsewhere of three priests and the wounding of another priest in a period of six months or so is just a coincidence, a priest told a Bzzzzz source. Actually, he said, it is a tiny fraction of the 9,040 priests (as of 2012-2013) in the country. It’s alarming only because of the time span.

Lolypop, Jonkie

NOT THE MAYORSHIP. With the talk that Rep. Jonas Cortes might run for Mandaue City Mayor in 2019 and possibly face incumbent Mayor Luigi Quisumbing came the question: How about the Ouano clan?

In 2016, Lolypop Ouano-Dizon attempted to resume the reign of the Ouanos (mayors Alfredo “Pedong” Ouano and Thadeo “Teddy” Ouano, for 19 years from 1988 to 2007) but One Cebu bet Lolypop lost to LP’s Luigi Quisumbing by 20,178 votes. Much earlier, in 2007, Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano also tried to keep City Hall within the family but Jonkie, with Amadeo Seno Jr., lost to Jonas Cortes.

Nest year, would Lolypop or another Ouano try a comeback? No one from the clan may go for the mayorship. Jonkie, a Provincial Board member, may run for reelection. And maybe Lolypop will go for a City Council seat. But under what party this time?
