Mental health services in Negros Occidental

YOU are not alone. There will always be someone who is willing to listen and be there for you.

The recent news about death by suicide is alarming. It is something to think about. We should act on it.

Most of the time, the person who commits suicide are people who are experiencing depression. It is common to feel sad especially when we encounter a loss. Depression is not just about sadness, it could be a feeling of emptiness, feeling always tired and feeling unworthy. A person may lose interest in an activity he or she previously enjoyed. A psychiatrist is the only person who can diagnose someone to be clinically depressed or has a major depressive disorder.

However, it can help if a concerned citizen can identify the signs and symptoms of depression. Here are some signs to watch for:

• Persistent sadness, anxious or “empty” mood

• Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism

• Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness

• Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities

• Decreased energy or fatigue

• Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions

• Appetite or weight changes

• Difficulty in sleeping, early-morning awakening or oversleeping

• Thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts

If you feel any of the above symptoms or you know anyone who is showing the signs, it is okay to ask for help. There is support available.

As a mental advocate, this writer, with the assistance of mental health professionals and advocates, compiled the list of mental health services in Negros Occidental. Help is available.

There are eight psychiatrists in Negros Occidental and physicians who are trained with World Health Organization (WHO)’s Mental Health Gap Action Program (mhGap).

Negros Occidental also have registered or licensed psychologists. There are some persons who prefer to talk to a psychologist. We identified twelve registered psychologists (RPsy) in Negros. Most of them are connected in the academe. There are some who have their own private practice.

There are still a number of psychologists who are processing their licenses.

The government also offers mental services through the Department of Health (DOH), Provincial Health Office (Mental Health Unit and City or Municipal Health Centers. The City of Bacolod has a mental health care center in Barangay Mansilingan.

Health Centers in cities and municipalities should have mental health services or at least can make referrals

The DOH has partnered with Natasha Goulbourn Foundation in providing a Hopeline for suicide prevention and emotional crisis. DOH Region 6 has launched an adolescent health connection line for those who have questions about their health.

The Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital has psychiatrists working in the out-patient department at least three times a week. They also have consultant psychologist and psychometricians.

Riverside Medical Center Inc. has a wellness clinic where they provide testing, counseling and psychotherapy services.

There are also private institutions that cater to the needs of those experiencing mental health issues like addiction. Negros Occidental has three rehabilitation centers and one out-patient clinic where a psychiatrist is available once a week.

Most schools have a Guidance and Counseling Center/Office where there are registered guidance counselors who can talk and listen to you. Visit them today and gain a friend.

There are also individuals who are not licensed or registered but are willing to help as mental health advocates. Family and friends can also be a source of strength in times of need.

Again, it’s okay to ask for help. There are services available in our province.
