Mayor Sara bares Friday’s awkward moments

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio was apologetic while on stage to Mayor Oscar Moreno for supposedly asking the “wrong question” during the mass oath taking of village officials at a hotel in the city last Friday, June 15.

The Presidential daughter said she asked Moreno who will run for mayor in next year's local polls and who would supposedly challenge him.

“Nangutana ko niya kinsa modagan mayor sa inyo sunod tuig ug nangutana ko kinsa man kalaban nimo (I asked him who will run for mayor next year and who will oppose him),” she said.

Duterte-Carpio said that Moreno answered her, “Ako modagan man ko. Si Dongkoy siguro modagan pud (I am running. Maybe Dongkoy will run too).”

She publicly made the apology during separate mass oath taking rites on the same day for village officials under the Padayon Pilipino Party led by Moreno's rival, former city mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Emano.

Duterte-Carpio said she felt the awkwardness when she raised the question, adding that she did not have any idea about the city’s political landscape.

She said the invitation came from Association of Barangay Council (ABC) president Yan Lam Lim, who was, until recently, an Emano ally.

“Pag-speech ni Mayor nangutana ko sa nag-invite nako nga si Kapitan Lim nga brother-in-law sa higala ni Presidente Digong sa Davao City ug nag-ingon siya 'kalaban na sila sa imong adtoon unya (When Mayor Oca was doing his speech, I asked Kapitan Lim who invited me and who is a brother-in-law of a friend of President Digong in Davao City. He told me Mayor Oca is the opponent of the person I am meeting next),”she said.

“Nakaingon ko mali man akong pangutana so sorry gyud mayor (Sorry Mayor I asked the wrong question),” she said.

Duterte-Carpio said she confirmed the other invitation of the Emano's Padayon Pilipino party as she remembered the party's founder when he was still the mayor of the city.

The Presidential daughter said she recalled accompanying her father who was then mayor of Davao City to deliver the relief goods and medicines for the displaced families due to the Typhoon Sendong.

“The last time nga nagkita mi ni Dongkoy was after Sendong maong pagkadawat nako sa invitation siya akong nadumdoman ug niingon ko nga usahon na lang nako akong lakaw and wala ko kabalo dili diay sila amigo ni Mayor Moreno (The last time I met with Dongkoy was after Sendong. When I got the invitation I remembered Dongkoy. What am I to do, I asked myself, I did not know he (Dongkoy) is not friends with Mayor Moreno),” she said.
