UC survives USJ-R for 3rd straight win

M Lhuillier-University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters erupted in the fourth quarter and edged out Casino Active-University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 84-81, in the 2018 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Partner’s Cup yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum to improve to 3-0 in the tournament.

The Webmasters used a 15-4 run in the first four minutes of the final quarter to turn a two-point deficit to a 72-63 lead with six minutes left in the game.

Cameroonian Frederick Ngoh Elombi led the Webmasters with 22 points, Joven Tagudin added 15, Darrell Shane Menina contributed 14 and Justine Dacalos chipped 11.

After the huge run from UC, the Jaguars managed to bring the gap to three points, 74-71, after JB Mantilla hit a trey but Menina answered back-to-back treys to make it 80-71.

The Jaguars had the final push with 6-0 blast capped off by Ralph Jude Dinolan’s basket to bring UC’s lead to three again, 80-77, with 45 ticks left, before Tagudin scored beyond the arc, giving UC an 83-77 lead.

Mantilla converted two free throws after Elombi was called for a goal tending violation to make it 83-81 with 17 seconds left but it was the closest they could get. Dacalos was fouled and split his charities and USJ-R missed a potential game-tying three.

Mantilla scored 20 points for USJ-R, while Dinolan contributed 14. (RSC)
