Tell it to SunStar: K-12 essentials

IN the Philippines, population is exponentially growing and drastic changes occur. Issues, gaps and concerns in Philippine education even interweave with the other problems that the country are facing. These aspects summon every citizen to take vaster responsibilities and urge us to contribute perspectives that may somehow satiate the longing for a better country. Thus the K-12 curriculum came into existence.

Now that it has been fully implemented, the Philippines is being given better opportunities for progress. In the past, the Philippine education system lagged behind western countries in the number of years that its young minds are developed.

Now the number of years for basic education has been lengthened to ensure that learners would master the skills and prepare them for employment and for tertiary education and provide them with middle-level and business skills. This allows the Philippine education system to rhyme with those of other Asian countries. The K-12 program has bloomed and is in full swing.

In the early years, parents and some students didn’t see the significance of the change. The K-12 curriculum, they said, was a waste of time and funds. Lack of resources were cited. But eventually horizons widened, perspectives sharpened, and innate skills nourished. In this curriculum, the learning process fosters progression and is deeply rooted in mental cognition and inner motivation.

Mental cognition is given importance during the formative stage wherein learning facets and phases are offered through exploration. Multiple intelligence tasks and strategies are made available for students and critical thinking is honed.

Nevertheless, this paradigm shift can only succeed if educators allow themselves to be part of the curriculum’s creation and implementation process.-Felex Navarro Tangal

Clamping of ambulance

While ambulances like that of the Cebu Doctors University Hospital can be clamped according to the law, I don’t think we should be too harsh in dealing with violations like this.

Since the use of an ambulance is important especially in saving lives, why should it be clamped? Fine is enough.--Debra Sevilla, Cebu City
