Talisay records low voter turnout in brgy., SK polls

ALTHOUGH it has the most number of registered voters compared to all six component cities in Cebu, Talisay City recorded the lowest voter turnout during the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections last May 14.

Based on a report by the Office of the Provincial Election Supervisor (OPES), only 71.44 percent or 91,806 out of the 123,499 registered voters in Talisay City showed up in polling places during last month’s elections.

Only 69 percent or 34,682 out of 50,037 registered voters in the same city voted in the SK elections.

Talisay City has a total of 173,536 registered voters, higher than all of the six component cities in Cebu.

Toledo City, for their part, has 123,499 registered voters in the barangay elections and 38,414 in the SK elections.

Of the number, OPES said 73 percent or 80,165 out of its 109,174 registered voters voted during the barangay elections.

A total of 71.76 percent or 27,564 out of 38,414 registered voters, on the other hand, voted in the SK elections.

Though it had the lowest number of registered voters in all six component cities, Bogo City recorded the highest voter turnout in the barangay polls.

A total of 40,030 out of 50,032 registered voters in Bogo showed up in polling places.

In the SK elections, the City of Naga had the highest voter turnout with 80.19 percent or 22,236 out of 27,730 registered voters voted.

Cebu Provincial Election Supervisor Lionel Marco Castillano previously said that the low voter turnout in some areas of Cebu was due to the postponement of the barangay and SK polls.

He also attributed this to the presence of uncontested candidates in some villages. (JKV)
