THE University of Visayas (UV) Green Lancers displayed their arsenal in a high-scoring 107-96 win over the Casino Active-University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in the 2018 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Partner’s Cup in the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

UV put up a stellar rally in the third quarter led by Rey Suerte and Gileant Delator, who connived for 20 points in the third, to break the game wide open with a 75-61 lead toward the end of the quarter.

Suerte led UV with 18 points, nine in the third quarter. Jiesel Tarrosa contributed 18, Delator added 17, and Josue Segumpan chipped in 15.

UV had enough firepower from a balanced offense the whole game.

Down 43-54 at the half, USJ-R started the third quarter blazing with a 9-0 run, capped off by a steal and a layup by Jaybee Mantilla to bring down the deficit to three, 54-57. But UV’s Delator and Suerte answered with two straight baskets to bring it back up to double digits, 75-61.

UV started the fourth quarter with six unanswered points before USJ-R’s RJ Dinolan and Miguel Gastador answered with a 7-0 run to bring the lead down to nine, 80-89.

Tricky Peromingan made a trey after Dinolan’s drive to get closer, 85-90, with 5:30 remaining. But UV answered with a 7-0 rally to keep the Jaguars at bay, 97-85, with four minutes left. Lassina Coulibaly put the icing on the cake with an emphatic dunk on a fast break, 105-93, with 1:13 left in the game. UV remains unbeaten after two games.

Mantilla had 28 points for USJ-R, which absorbed its third loss in as many games.

In the high school division, the UV Baby Lancers grabbed its second win in three games after beating the USJ-R Baby Jaguars, 95-86. Gabriel Cometa scored a game-high 26 points for the Baby Green Lancers, Andrew Actub contributed 18 points, and Joshua Yerro chipped in 12 points. (RSC)
