Briones: Speaking of

I KNOW I shouldn’t speak ill of the dead, especially if I don’t know the person personally.

But I couldn’t help but think that maybe Steve Go got what was coming to him.

Go was the 40-year-old suspected drug lord who was shot in the head by a fellow inmate inside the Mandaue City Jail past 11 a.m. last Tuesday.

Go certainly was no angel when he was still alive. According to fellow inmates, the guy, who was inside pending trial for murder charges, was a bully.

There were conflicting reports as to what happened right before detainee Cresenciano Heyrana shot Go.

Based on the initial report from SPO3 Ariel Perez, chief investigator of Mandaue City Police Station 5, and JO3 Christopher Delega, an investigator assigned to the jail’s male dormitory, Heyrana claimed that the victim threatened to kill him.

Go was reportedly in the middle of a game of “hantak” with a few others when he started arguing with Heyrana. While the former watched how the coin he just tossed landed, the latter allegedly grabbed a .38 revolver that had been concealed near a bed, and shot Go.

The gun allegedly belonged to the victim.

Okay, but something doesn’t add up.

I don’t know what Heyrana looks like, but I have seen photos of Go in the paper. And believe you me, you wouldn’t want to mess with the guy.

Unless, of course, Go had been toying with Heyrana earlier.

In a Cebu Daily News report, inmates had told the warden that Go had been playing with his gun, and repeatedly pointed it at Heyrana.

I guess he just didn’t count on Heyrana going ballistic.

Apparently, Go was used to getting his own way even after he was locked up.

When he was first arrested in 2016, he was detained at the Mandaue City Jail. However, he was unpopular with the other inmates, always getting into fights, so authorities ended up moving him to the Talisay City Jail.

But once there, Go got embroiled in more fights, prompting his transfer to the Carcar City Jail.

I don’t know what it was, maybe Go was claustrophobic or anthropophobic, but the guy just couldn’t get along with the others. And so he found himself back at the Mandaue City Jail last October.

Based on the Cebu Daily News report, Go continued to consider himself above the law.

Many contraband were seized from his cell in a series of surprise inspections after jail officials received reports that banned items for Go were being smuggled inside.

The guy even got seven jail guards relieved from their posts for allegedly conniving with him.

And get this, a sex toy was found inside his cell last June 15.

Now, that might explain why Heyrana couldn’t take it anymore.
