More contraband seized in greyhound operation inside Mandaue jail

PACKS of illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia and appliances were recovered in the greyhound operation inside Mandaue City Jail yesterday morning, two days after suspected drug lord Steve Go was shot dead inside the facility.

Nine small sachets believed to contain shabu, assorted plastic packs, two syringes, nine disposable lighters, a tooter and three cell phone chargers were found in TC-2 building where Go was killed last Tuesday.

Appliances, bladed weapons and more than P4,000 in cash were confiscated from other cells.

The search was led by Police Regional Office (PRO) 7.

Last June 15, a silicon sex toy found in Go’s cell was among the contraband seized during a surprise inspection.

The PRO 7 marching band played while operatives, assisted by teams from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency 7 and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) 7, searched the dormitories for contraband.

Chief Supt. Debold Sinas, PRO 7 director, said he didn’t want the inmates to be afraid.

They were even given eggs, bread and water, he said.

“Morag fiesta ba. Katong mga inmates nga agitated, medyo malingaw pod kadali (It was like a party. Those inmates who were agitated were able to have some fun),” he said.

Sinas said they decided to confiscate the appliances as these give an impression that the inmates lead a comfortable existence in the jail. Mandaue City Police Office Director Roberto Alanas said they will regularly patrol the jail vicinity to prevent smuggling activities.

He will also recommend the formation of a special investigation and task group to look into Go’s murder.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Human Rights 7 has sent a subpoena to BJMP 7, asking for documents about the shooting incident. (KAL)
