Employers urged to comply with new wage order

MANILA -- One day before the implementation of the new wage order in Metro Manila, a union group called on employers Sunday to ensure compliance to Wage Order No. 17 of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board–National Capital Region (RTWPB-NCR).

In a phone interview, Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) spokesman Alan Tanjusay said there is no reason for employers to avoid the wage order since it has already taken effect despite an appeal filed by the Employers’ Confederation of the Philippines (Ecop).

“We expect full compliance with the new wage order for NCR workers already in effect,” Tanjusay said.

Last March, the TUCP filed a petition at the RTWPB-NCR to increase the daily minimum pay of Metro Manila workers by P90 due to rising costs of basic services and prices of commodities triggered by a series of increases in fuel prices.

On May 18, the NCR wage board issued a new wage order introducing a P30 wage increase for workers in Metro Manila that will be paid in two tranches.

For its part, the RTWPB-NCR said it has yet to receive any petition for exemption for Wage Order No. 17.

“So far, there has been none,” RTWPB-NCR chairman Alan Macaraya said.

Macaraya, however, said those who will apply for exemption still have 30 days to do so, from the day the wage order took effect.

Republic Act No. 6727 or the Wage Rationalization Act provides that the establishments that may apply for exemption from the new wage order are distressed establishments; retail/service establishments employing not more than 10 workers; establishments whose total assets are not more than P3 million; and establishments adversely affected by natural calamities.
