BPO firms to expand in Davao

MAJOR players of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) in the Philippines are considering to expand in Davao City to back their operations in areas frequented by typhoons.

"This is one of the developments we are seeing. Davao now is becoming a disaster recovery platform for big players in the country," ICT Davao president Bert Barriga told reporters yesterday in the sidelines of the Club 888 forum at Marco Polo Hotel Davao.

Although, he clarified that they don't intend to highlight the natural disasters, but the city does not experience the calamities too often as compared to other provinces in the country.

"Many BPOs in places like Cebu, Iloilo, and Bacolod experience a lot of downtime when hit by natural disasters," he said.

Barriga said many BPOs are looking at the city as the second tier where their operations cannot be hampered.

He said there are already a number of queries from big BPO players for expansion here.

Barriga said with more companies investing here will have to mean an increase in employment.

"If they will be putting up a facility here for disaster recovery, it should be replicated with the main branch. If the BPO company has 200 seats in Cebu, it should be the same with the one to be constructed in Davao," he said.

Even this early, he added they already got inquiries from two companies, one might put up a 6,000-sqm. facility and another 2,000 sqm. of office space.

By 2015, they are targeting around 30,000 to 35,000 full-time employees in the industry. Currently, full-time employees are around 20,000 to 21,000.

Barriga bared yesterday that there will be two more IT parks soon to rise in Matina area, bringing the more to four with the existing NCCC IT Center and the Matina IT Park that is set to be completed in the first quarter of 2014.

Both projects will have five storeys with an office space of around 1,500 sqm. to 2,000 sqm. and can hold at least 300 seats.
