Badjaos are now registered

IN JANUARY this year, the Tambayan Center for Children’s Rights Inc. in partnership with the Badjao community at Purok 4, Isla Verde, Brgy. 23-C formed a group that aims to identify risks and threats to their community.

The Participatory Disaster Risk Analysis group realized that most members of the community do not have birth certificates.

Most of them do not know their birthdays and age. The reason, majority of them were conceived at home where they do not have access to birth registration.

The lack of access to birth certification prevents them from getting education and attaining formal employment, which is the reason why Badjaos live in poverty.

Project Manager of Tambayan Center for Children’s Rights Glory Seno, in an interview, said that the absence of birth certification among Badjaos is the root cause of their absence of access to basic social services.

Last November 21, 2017, Tambayan led a Mobile Birth Registration for Bajdaos in Purok 4, Isla Verde, Brgy. 23-C, Davao City. This activity was in partnership with The Johanniter International Assistance, German Federal Foreign Office, Davao City Local Civil Registrar’s Office, City Health Office, Department of Education Region 11 and the Barangay 23-C Council.

The project manager added that the objective for the current year is to register 150 Badjaos and another 150 by 2018.

Tambayan Secretary for Badjao Community, Maryjane Araman, also shared in an interview that she is happy for her Badjao brothers and sisters because for a long time they were seeking for help and now, at last, her Badjao brothers and sisters will gain access to explore their rights.
