REIGNING International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas is no doubt a superstar in the boxing ring yet he confessed being a starstruck fan when he met President Rodrigo R. Duterte in person during a courtesy call at Malacañan Palace Tuesday.
"Na-starstruck jud mi oi. Mura mig nabayot hahahaha (We were starstruck)," the 25-year-old Ancajas said in a Facebook interview with SunStar Davao.
He shared having to shake the President's hand and being able to talk to him in person was unforgettable.
Ancajas said, "Para sa ako murag kato na time ang dili jud makalimtan sa tibuok kinabuhi nako as a boxer. Lodi kaayo namo sya, makamayan pa jud pirte namong lipaya (Meeting the President was the most unforgettable moment for me as a boxer. He is our idol and being able to shake his hand and talk to him we are overjoyed)."
He said it meant so much more to him and World Boxing Organization (WBO) international minimumweight champion Mark Anthony Barriga that the President promised to support them.
"Pag-ingon nya na mu-support sya maka inspire kaayo bilang boxer kay President nagud ang nag-ingon (For a President to tell us that he will support is really inspiring)," Ancajas said.
He, however, said that being promoted under Top Rank under Bob Arum is still under negotiation.
Ancajas, born in Panabo City but started his amateur boxing career in Davao City's Almendras Gym, admitted being flattered that Top Rank is interested in him.
"Nalipay mi na napansin mi sa top Rank (We're happy to get Top Rank's attention)," he said.
He won over Jamie Conlan vix sixth round stoppage last November 18 in Belfast.
