Corpus cagers rule CDOBF tourney

CORPUS Christi School ruled the 2017 CDOBF Basketball Tournament concluded here on Saturday at the Macasandig covered courts.

Both the Junior Knights and Baby Knights of coach Carlo Dagalea and assistant coach Jonas Molawan emerged champions in their respective categories.

The Junior Knights copped thye 15-under crown after a crushing win over the Merry Child School in the final, 95-62. While the Baby Knights took a difficult route in overcoming the hard-fighting St. Mary’s School, 69-60 for the 12-under title.

Ian Dave Bustamante finished with 16 points for the jr. Knights, while Ron Mart Abrea gave 12 markers.

The jr. Knights never gave Merry Child any quarter, leading by as much as 33 points in one of the most lopsided title matches in the local inter-school hoopfest.

In a thrilling 12-under final, Jarl Jovan Artango nailed the heroics for the baby Knights.

From a 59-57 Saint Mary’s lead, Artango was left wide-open from the rainbow sphere to make a trey and fished a foul in the process with only 6.4 seconds left.

However, Artango failed to complete a 4-point play as he missed from the freethrow line, thus giving the SMS Fiat of coach Rene Ilogon the chance to steal the show in the dying seconds when Ren-Ren Abada got fouled at the turn in penalty situation.

Ilogon hugged Abada before taking his own pair of freethrows.

But Abada bungled all his freethrows for SMS tears and a wild celebration for the Knights on the floor.
