Donaire gets biggest fight after last year’s loss

NONITO Donaire Jr. gets his biggest fight since losing his world title last year as he takes on fellow former world champion Carl Frampton on April 7 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

“On April 7, we’ll be in Belfast, where Carl Frampton will be fighting [Nonito] Donaire. It’s a real cracking fight, a good fight for him, and we’ll be giving further details in the new year,” Frampton’s promoter Frank Warren said in a report posted at the ESPN website.

This is Donaire Jr.’s biggest fights since losing his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight crown against Jessie Magdaleno in 2016.

The 35-year-old Doniare Jr. made his comeback to the ring last September, after a layoff for close to a year. He fought as a featherweight and beat Ruben Garcia Hernandez by a lopsided unanimous decision.

Frampton, a two-division world champion, won the World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight belt with a majority decision win over Leo Santa Cruz in 2016. He, however, lost to a majority decision in his rematch to Santa Cruz last in January of last year.

The 30-year-old Frampton returned to the ring after a 10-month hiatus and beat Horacio Garcia by a convincing unanimous decision. (EKA)
