NEWLY-APPOINTED Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 Director Shalimar Hofer Tamano on Wednesday said tourism stakeholders should expect more visits from Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo in the regions this year.
“The secretary will be visiting the regions more compared to last year. So, we expect her to be here anytime soon. She wants to meet the private sector and talk to them,” said Tamano, adding that gathering the private sector is one of his first assignments as the new tourism director for Central Visayas.
Tamano replaced Joshur Judd Lanete, who resigned from his post, citing health reasons. Lanete was with DOT 7 for four months.
“I am humbled by the secretary’s designation as a regional director for Central Visayas. As far as the DOT is concerned, Central Visayas is the biggest, one of DOT’s jewels,” he said.
Tamano said he is excited to work with the local government units in the province and the private sector as Cebu hold’s a special place in his heart.
“My mother is from Cebu. I have relatives here. This is a happy comeback. I had fun memories in Cebu. I am happy to be back,” he said.
Tamano’s mother, Marleen Hofer, is from Ginatilan, Cebu. His relatives include Oj Hofer, one of Cebu’s fashion designers.
Tamano has been with the DOT for 12 years. His previous post was with DOT Head Office in Manila as department legislative liaison officer.
“The regional director (post) is new to me, but I am willing to work hard and learn as early as possible,” he said.
According to Tamano, sports and faith tourism are among the thrusts of the DOT this year.
However, he said he needs to work double time for the Sinulog celebration and gather inputs from all stakeholders on other tourism products for Cebu and the region that needs intensive marketing.
In the coming days, Tamano will be traveling to Bohol, Siquijor and Negros Oriental to also meet with the different LGUs and tourism stakeholders. (KOC)
