THE Negros Occidental secondary girls’ basketball team is eyeing to return to the Palarong Pambansa and avenge their last year’s finals loss to eventual champions National Capital Region.
But before securing that ticket to Vigan, the Negrense dribblers, also the 2017 Palarong Pambansa silver medalists, have to outsmart their rivals in the 2018 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet scheduled next week in Iloilo City.
The Denden Velez-managed team is composed of Dona Montserrat Memorial High School’s Karla Andrade, Jaceyrelle Anne Britania, Mica Camba, Rhea Lyn Castillo, Princess Marie Fabruada, and Kent Jane Pastrana.
Also suiting up for the team are University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos’ Lina Goto and Dyna Sicil Nieves, Bacolod City National High School’s Charity Grace Gicana and Claire Soleda as well as Luisa Martina de la Paz of University of St. La Salle and Jenelyn Tuyo of Hervias National High School.
Among the Negros Occidental players expected to anchor the team are Pastrana and Fabruada, who were part of the Philippine Under-18 Women’s Basketball team which competed in the 9th Asean School Games last year in Singapore.
Velez said the team has been in rigid preparation including their participation in the National Basketball Training Center Silay Leg where they were the only female team in the tournament.
To call the play from the sidecourt is coach Peter Coniendo alongside chaperon Bethany Villarin, and trainer Steven Siriritan. Co-team manager is Silay City Mayor Mark Golez. (HGD)
