Vicente: Baguio locals bag BJJ medals

BRAZILIAN Jiu Jitsu or BJJ as it is popularly known is a martial arts and combat sport gaining a lot of attention and is taking the sports world with a lot of potential.

The Brazilian concept of Jiu Jitsu originated from Kodokan Judo first as a martial arts and has now evolve to adapt into a combat sport that went through a lot of testing to eventually come up with its sports concept.

Just like its origin judo, BJJ as a sport is tied in a concept of safety.

As a sport, it promotes the idea of a smaller person defending against a bigger assailant as long as he is knowledgeable on how to manipulate weaknesses and leverage to subdue his opponent while understanding the basic anatomy of the body most specially joints and other vital parts. When these techniques are applied, it would make the opponent tap to surrender or pass out as a resort of stubborn pride.

Last February 17 to 18, Asian Sport Jiu Jitsu (ASJJF) held the “Central Luzon International Jiu Jitsu Championship 2018 “a BJJ with Gi (uniform) and No Gi competition where Baguio City’s own judo blackbelt and former Judo Philippine Team member Guillermo Geronimo joined.

Geronimo holds a BJJ Blue Belt with two stripes and is currently the head coach of Team Fabricio Jiu Jitsu Baguio at Flow and Forms Martial Arts and Yoga Studio at Ecco Building, Assumption Road.

Geronimo won gold in the featherweight division in with GI category and added another bronze in the same weight division in the No Gi Category.

He was joined by Jerome Wanawan who bagged silver in the No Gi category in the rooster weight division. Jerome is also a professional MMA fighter under Team Lakay and the kickboxing instructor of the Flow and Forms Martial Arts and Yoga Studio.

“The achievements of our coaches are testaments of the versatility of our coaches and trainers. Our studio is a haven for physical fitness, wellness and martial arts offering yoga, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, kickboxing, circuit workouts, karate and practical self-defense offering legitimate training from legitimate and credible Instructors,” according to Flow and Forms Martial Arts and Yoga Studio owner Kathryn Yap.
