ROTARY International is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers that see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in their communities, and within themselves.
One of their programs is known for developing the next generation of leaders. The Rotary Club of Bacolod-Central has been organizing the New Generation Conference since 2012.
The objectives of the conference are:
To provide leadership and life skills to select youth leaders in the community
To engage the youth in social and political issues that matter
To train participants to harness their full potential and become responsible citizens in the community
This year, on its 6th year, conference chair Meliton Sillador Jr. brought together five speakers to enlighten about 70 millennials from selected public and private schools and teens from Kalipay Negrense Foundation last Saturday at the GC & C Group of Companies Building.
Timothy Williamson Sy, a JCI member, talked about “Financial Literacy for Teens.” He told the participants, “you can’t be too young to start thinking about financial freedom.”
Jabez Oberez, a Toastmaster, spoke meaningfully in her talk, “True Love Waits.”
Renniel Bermejo of Better Days Ahead Recovery Center talked about “Understanding Addiction,” specifically drug addiction.
Paige Alitao, a martial art expert, shared about self-defense by demonstrating some moves to defend self.
This columnist, a mental health advocate, encouraged the youth to further know themselves and to accept and love themselves more in “Teens: Who I Am.”
The participants (and the Rotarians), learned their temperaments. It can be recalled that there are four temperaments: the Popular Sanguine (pleasure seeking, sociable); the Perfect Melancholy (introvert and thoughtful); the Powerful Choleric (independent, decisive and goal-oriented); and the Peaceful Phlegmatic (relaxed and quiet). It was wonderful to meet everyone’s unique personalities.
The event was fully supported by District 3850 Governor Jundad Legislador, President Maria Antonieta Lopez and other officers of the Rotary Club of Bacolod–Central.
The participants enjoyed the whole day conference.
