“LIFE unravels its stories in many colors,” my friend Rosse G. once told me.

“If that is so, it means life is made up of one big fabric that uses different types of threads and colors,” I replied.

“Thread by thread we learn about the stories of friends, relatives and strangers. Year after year, the fabric that makes us up gets shorter and shorter until there’s no more thread to pull out. Only our soul remains,” Rosse said.

“Such deep thoughts on a cloud-filled Wednesday,” I said.

“We have to make something out of the borrowed life we have,” she said.

“Or the allotted threads appointed to us at birth,” I corrected her.

“Right. I was young once and now I am old. I have learned that we never learn. No matter what I say to young people, they don’t listen.”

“We never did either when we were yet young. Just last year, my friend Takuy received a calling card from Father Time. The card reminded Takuy he was no longer young: He had atherosclerosis and osteoarthritis. He suddenly accepted he was 61,” I said.

“Yep, white hair is the first calling card that Father Time sends us,” Rosse said.

“Is that why many people color their hair once it gets faded?” I asked.

“Maybe they’re afraid of looking older,” Rosse replied.

“If I were young now, and a new university graduate, what would you advice me to do?

Rosse put on her Thinking Cap. This is what she told me:

Look Up. This refers to keeping a regular prayer time. Five minutes of plugging into your Great Sponsor will boost your day. But Look Up also refers to looking up from your smartphone. Spend a few seconds looking up and looking at your surroundings. The world is not in your smartphone; it is around you. Enjoy the free eye candy that Nature offers you.

Look to your Left, then to your Right. Do this especially when crossing the street. It also means being aware of people around you. You are not the only human being on Planet Earth. Give time to others.

Look Down. No, not at your smartphone again. This means looking at where you are walking, observing the vegetation along the path you’re taking.

I talked too long with Rosse and now I am running out of space. I never learn.
