Vinluan: Exercise excuses and how to be motivated

WE’VE HEARD all kinds of excuses like; I don’t have time, I’ve never been much of an athlete, I don’t even know how to play the game, exercising is boring, etc. When we are called upon to exercise, we’d rather do what we like best to do.

Remember the Chinese proverb: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” The proverb reverberate a general message how we journey into life. The same that we should agree when we talk of exercising for health and fitness, the first step is for us to know that we are beginners, ready and somewhat willing to get into shape.

By admitting that we are beginners will make us fill better, in the first place we are not experts in the field of exercise that we have to learn it step-by-step, starting from a small scale and work up gradually because we cannot overcome years of sloth in a few sweaty weeks, but we can make a slow and steady progress towards our goals.

Know how fit you are by having a thorough physical check up before starting or engaging in any fitness programs. Try to find someone who can guide you and give thorough fitness tests, to enable you to determine the best fitness program you will indulge in, fitness tests will help you know how fit you are, do exercises properly, and know how flexible you will be.

Obviously, not all fitness centers or gyms in the locality have these services. The thing you must do in the absence of such services is to find an experienced athlete in the sport, or join in supervised classes of sports organizations like the YMCA, sports clubs, fitness centers etc. who will watch you exercise, guide, and correct obvious faults on how you do your practice.

Having an instructor will help a lot in motivating you to continue exercising, hold you back when your enthusiasm pushes you faster than your physical limits, and encourage you when you become discouraged in your exercise. The group support of a class will also be buoying.

In order to achieve your fitness goal the primordial motivation factor you have is your commitment. Tell yourself that you are to prepare your body. Commit yourself to getting into good shape. Exercising is asking yourself that you only need to set aside three hours a week at the start.
