P2-M smuggled rice shipment seized in Zamboanga

GOVERNMENT Authorities have seized a smuggled rice shipment with an estimated worth of P2 million off this southern port city, an official disclosed Saturday.

Lieutenant Commander Alvin Dagalea, Zamboanga Coastguard Station commander, disclosed the shipment was intercepted around 9:35 p.m. Friday 300 yards off Taha wharf in the village of Baliwasan, west of this city.

Dagalea said the smuggled rice shipment was intercepted aboard M/L Fatima and M/B Rajena joint team of personnel from the coastguard, Joint Task Force Zamboanga and Bureau of Customs (BOC).

Dagalea said they smuggled rice shipment was intercepted while they were conducting security patrol.

He said the rice shipment came from Bongao, Tawi-Tawi but ownership of the cargo has yet to e ascertained.

He said the M/L Fatima and M/B Rajena were taken to the local port.

He said that initial on board inspection on the two water crafts yielded numerous maritime safety violations.
