City sets strict anti-mendicancy law implementation

THE Zamboanga City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) is seeking to strictly implement anti-mendicancy regulations to eradicate the widespread street begging in the city streets.

CSWDO head Socorro Rojas said the office will be enlisting the help of the Zamboanga City Police Office to enforce the anti-mendicancy law to discourage residents from giving alms to beggars, particularly in busy thoroughfares and intersections.

“In coordination with our police, we will strictly implement the law especially in major intersections,” Rojas said.

Rojas said the CSWDO continues to conduct of rescue operations and all forms of assistance to mendicants, but despite their interventions, most opt to return to the streets because of poverty and hunger.

Other coordinative efforts and strategies are also being explored by the CSWDO, including orientations for mendicants returning to their families, coordination with Indigenous Peoples (IP) representative in the City Council Tungkuh Hanapi, and the finalization of the plans to operationalize a processing center for mendicants in the former Magbasa Kita building.
