Spectacular performances at Koro Dabawenyo

THE City Government of Davao has concluded the hugely successful choral showdown, “Koro Dabawenyo” held at SM City Davao, last Sunday, March 11, 2018.

The competition aims to scour the best vocal ensembles in Davao City. It features competitions for elementary and high school choirs and community-based group, who may want to take part.

The grand prize winners will receive P20,000 for each category. Second prize takes home P15,000 and third placers at P10,000. Consolation prizes are P3,000 each group per category.

During the welcome remarks, Mr. Lemuel Ortonio, officer-in-charge of Davao City Investment and Promotion Center, delivered Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio’s message. Also present during the event were Davao City Library Head Pedrita Badar and Ms’ Lorna Mandin (Officer-in-Charge, Integrated Gender and Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office.

The musical event’s directing, planning and over-all coordination were headed by Mr. Dan Salvaña Jr. of Salvo Events. The entire Salvo team gave their utmost best to ensure that the day is a success.

The criteria for judging includes musicianship (quality of voice, diction, choral bend and balance), artistry & musicality, choreography and over-all performance& deportment.

With an esteemed panel of music biz heavyweights at the judges' table namely, Mr. Peter Ian Buaya, conductor of the multi-awarded University of Mindanao Chorale and “Ani ng Dangal Awardee” by the National Commission for Culture of the Arts. His group won as grand champion in Singapore in 2016 and in Busan, Korea in 2017. Mr. Rebel Villamor Magdagasang, a songwriter for telenovelas and an alumnus of Carillon, Ateneo Glee Club and Mr. Romeo Jun Palec, voice coach and assistant conductor of Sta. Cecilia Chorale.

Winners for the Elementary Category were Ma-a Central Elementary School Glee Club (1st), Matina Elementary School Children’s Choir (2nd) and Magallanes Elementary School Children’s Choir (3rd).

For High School Category, Bernardo D. Carpio Harmoni Chorale (1st), Dona Carmen Deia National High School Denians Vice Ensemble (2nd), and Phil. Nikkei Jin Kai International School Cantapella (3rd).

Barangay 14-A Koro Dabawenyo won the first place for Community-based category and Barangay Centro Agdao Choir and Ubusca Choral from Buhangin Proper placed second and third respectively.
