Vinluan: Overcoming mental fatigue

THE crack of a gun, a shout “hajime”, a blow of the whistle, etc. propels you along in a competition and you start to think why you are into this madness? You scream. But you’re off; you fight adrenalin and hold back. This is how the challenge of competitions starts, where body and mind works together.

Every athlete in the different sport fields when starting a competition has a game plan in mind. In a Judo competition for example with just a 4-5 minutes time, athletes must move fast because they have to have a point beating the clock, which is entirely different from that of a runner.

Runners like a trackster starts fast while the road racer starts slow, however, both have a pace to maintain considering the elements of time and distance. And just like all athletes, they all hit a tough time during competitions or just run out of gas and feel the urge to quit.

In these times’ athletes have only two choices; you can quit or keep going. However, just the knowledge that you can quit sometime, is often enough to get you going. All athletes in any kind of sports have this experience and keep plugging away, feeling tired body and mind they slow down but they keep on moving.

Mental fatigue is tougher, but you can overcome it, with proper conditioning during your training and workout, because you have work so hard to quit easily. Many have been on the edge of quitting during competitions and thinks that there are only two reasons to quit, having an illness or injury.

The end of every competition brings new life for the competitor, it gives new confidence. Because the taste of a personal victory overwhelms you; win or lose you drive yourself toward the end of competition with a controlled spirit however with uncontrolled smile.

Finishing a competition even out of breath, most competitors always remember vividly that their success of overcoming mental as well as body fatigue in any contest makes their tales instructive and often inspiring.
