Barrita: Wasting votes

CEBU Archbishop Jose Palma, in his Easter Day message, urged voters

not to waste their votes in the May 9 elections.

Ang usa ka sayop nga buhat mahimong tinuig unya nga penitensya (One mistake can mean years of suffering),” His Grace said.

New politicians seeking to replace old ones, always tell us how the people suffer under the present administration. Let’s see if the people are still willing to suffer once more, of course, in a new administration.

Archbishop Palma reminded voters not to waste their votes and reject candidates who use illegal means to gain office. The illegal means of gaining office should include vote-buying.

“For voters, this is an occasion to show that power comes from the people and choosing the right people will bring progress to our nation,” he said.

To be clear, not wasting votes doesn’t mean voters have to cash in on their votes.

Did the voters learn anything? An old saying goes, “You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.”

I think that refers to only one politician fooling the people.

When that particular politician could no longer fool all the people all the time, another politician comes along to fool them.

Archbishop Palma urged voters to remember the candidates’ lifestyles, achievements, supporters, election procedures and reputations.

“It (voting) is a beautiful opportunity and we shouldn’t waste it,” he said.

He didn’t say voters should also be honest. But a wag said an honest voter is one who, when bought, stay bought.

The Cebu prelate talked about the candidates achievements. No wonder presidential candidates keep harping on their achievements.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte keeps trumpeting on the success of his anti-criminality drive in his city.

Vice President Jejomar Binay has his “KKK” (Karanasan, Kaalaman at Komitment). A joke says former Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas has “KKKK” (Karanasan, Kaalaman, Kakayahan at may Korina pa).
