INFOGRAPHIC: Earthquake magnitude vs intensity

EARTHQUAKES are a common thing in the Philippines, with the archipelago located along western fringes of the Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where most of strong earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

Just recently, moderate quakes shook some parts of the Visayas and Mindanao, with 5.2-magnitude tremors reported in Surigao and Ormoc City in Leyte early this month, July.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the agency tasked to mitigate disasters that may arise from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami and other related geotectonic phenomena, uses two terms when reporting about quakes: magnitude and intensity.

But what is the difference between the two? See this infographic to understand the difference.
