Police visibility doubled; Baguio night market to stay open

AMID security threat and clamor from some business sectors, the night market in Harrison Road will not close but authorities said additional police will be deployed in the area during market hours.

Following the bombing of the night market in Davao City and the declaration of the state of lawlessness in the country, Baguio City Police Office city director George Daskeo told Sun.Star Baguio police personnel will be more visible in the area starting 9:00 in the evening until 2:00 in the morning to make market goers and traders safer.

Meanwhile, Mayor Mauricio Domogan stressed night market operation will continue but will be temporarily closed if safety of the public will be threatened.

The night market remains one of the top tourist attractions of the Summer Capital generating at least P1 to P1.4 million monthly.

Domogan on the other hand said the declaration of state of lawlessness in the country aims to prevent further violence that may escalate anytime soon following the Davao bombing.

“To me there is no question that he declared a state of Lawlessness which simply means that he is exercising his authority not usually done by him in normal situation such as ordering the AFP to help the PNP to quell or stop lawlessness, rebellion or insurrection for the safety of the people,” Domogan stated.

“But take note that he did not suspend any of our rights such as the writ of habeas corpus. This is different from martial law which the public fear,” Domogan explained.

Presently, checkpoints, foot and mobile PNP patrols are intensified in the Summer Capital to assure safety of the public especially in convergence areas such as malls, department stores, parks and the night market.
