New kid on the block

A PERSON can fully express his or her feelings through music. But for this young Dabawenya, she wants to leave a different mark.

"I learned to appreciate music and how to make people remember you by it," said the 20-year-old Patricia Allen Eleonore Dobles, who started her career as a disk jockey (DJ) in 2014.

The only child of Lea Amor Dobles, a nurse, is popularly known as Pae Dobles among her DJ friends and in the party scene.

Before Pae learned the ropes of being a DJ, she thought the main role of a DJ is just remixing.

It was during her third year in High School when she was introduced to Sherwyn Diwa, a DJ of Hacienda Royale.

Diwa taught small bits about being a DJ and from there her interest grew.

"I used to try to produce and record things and try to make a track. Gumagamit nga akong windows na software na pang edit ng video. Got no clue back then," shared Pae.

Gabriel de Cadiz introduced her to Niel Recinto who taught her the basics, and as they say, the rest was history.

For over two years as a DJ, Pae has developed a new appreciation for music.

"Great songs being produced every day. There is an endless pool of great music. So many to choose from! Na-appreciate ko rin yung how to make people to remember you," she said.

At present, Pae specializes in genres bigroom, electro, agressive, jungle house, hard trap, future bass, and trap.

Specifically, she uses a Pioneer DDJ-SB for small events while Pioneer CDJ 2000 Nexus and Pioneer DJM 900 for big events.

Balancing her time as a DJ and as a student is not easy.

She is in her fourth year as a Mass Communication student in Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU).

She took advantage of her free time practicing mixing potential songs she can use for her gigs.

As a newbie, Pae admits that she's not perfect at the same time experienced technical errors during her gigs.

"Ang layo ko pa. Blessed lang ako sa mga nakukuha ko na gigs. Paminsan di ako makapag beat match, paminsan, mali yung pagmix ko to another song, iba-iba. Siguro halos lahat ng mali nagawa ko na, tapos na uulit ko parin. Pero ayun nga. Practice talaga ako everyday," Pae said.

She has been invited to several party events including the Castaway Kadayawan Vibe Fest at SM City Davao, Cuervo Kadayawan at Streets, Carte Blanche 2014, Rave Volt 2016, DJ Fest Davao,

Countdown to 2016 New Year Party at SM Lanang Premier, Hello 2015 at SM Lanang, Fresh Beats: Party with DJ Tom Taus, #DU31, Splashfest: Tagum Fiesta Pool Party, Arcadia 2015, Festival Friday at URBN featuring Beatbreaker and Foonasis, Wonderful Mindanow Explore Race On After-Party, and Pre-Concert party of Globex Chainsmokers at Huckleberry Davao.

She also became a brand ambassador of Colourette Cosmetics.

Pae, however, said all of her achievements came to reality with the help of her mom who was her main inspiration.

Aside from being a DJ, Pae is also known as a dancer and even became a member of a band in Davao City.

Pae said she idolized several established DJs such as Skrillex, Marshmello, Nicky Romero, Carlo Atendido, Aryan Magat, and Cam Abecina.

"They're all great DJ. Super galing. Techniques, executions, tracklist," she said.

She also became a brand ambassador of Colourette Cosmetics.

There are seminars which can be organized for aspiring DJs.

"Ang daming gustong matuto mag dj as early as their age. Mashock nalang ako sa grade 3 ko na pinsan na gusto din nya maging DJ katulad ko," Pae said.

After her recent stints in big party or rave events, her love for music got even deeper.

"Music really speaks to a person. Sometimes, when you cant fully express your feelings, music is there to help you find out what you feel," she added.

For aspiring DJs, Pae's advice was to listen to your DJ's set but going to DJ schools such as BPM and Bounce is still better or ask DJ friends to help you out.

She encouraged hopefuls to continue reaching their dreams as nothing is possible.

Although she's still on starting line of her career as a DJ, Pae is optimistic of a bright future ahead.

"Yes, and I'm excited on what the future Pae Dobles will do next," Pae said.
