Grenade explosion in Maguindanao hurts 2

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- A school supervisor in Datu Montawal town in Maguindanao escaped death when a fragmentation grenade exploded inside her residential compound around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, a rescue volunteer said.

Toto Abu, volunteer for the 505 Disaster Rescue Emergencies Assistance and Management (Dream), identified the unscathed teacher as Delia Daniel, a district supervisor in Datu Montawal town.

3 soldiers hurt in Cotabato encounter

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Three members of the Army’s Alpha Company of the 57th Infantry Battalion were wounded after an encounter with communist guerillas in North Cotabato, on Tuesday, a military official said.

Lieutenant Colonel Noel dela Cruz, commander of the 57th IB, said his men were patrolling in Barangay Cabilao, Makilala when they chanced upon a number of New Peoples' Army (NPA) rebels positioned in the area.

2 students behind teacher slay: Piñol

KIDAPAWAN CITY - The killers of a 26-year-old public school teacher in M'lang town in North Cotabato were two high school students, who, at their young age are already used to handling guns even inside the campus, the town mayor said.

M'lang Mayor Joselito Piñol said the gunmen of Shernan Mark de Eyoy Duerme were both senior students of M'lang National High School-Annex in Barangay Lepaga, M'lang who allegedly got irked when they were scolded by the victim a week ago during a Citizens' Army Training (CAT) formation.

P600,000 reward for info on Dulay's killers

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- The reward money to those who could lead to the identification and arrest of the killers of Vice Mayor Pol Dulay of Kabacan, North Cotabato increased by P400,000 as the slain local executive was laid to his final rest on Saturday, reports said.

Cotabato Governor Lala Mendoza, during the Provincial Peace and Order Council held on Saturday, said she is shelling from her own funds P200,000 to complement the P200,000 that Kabacan Mayor George Tan has initially released as cash reward.

Police: Loose firearms proliferate in Central Mindanao

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Close to 18,000 firearms are considered "loose" in Central Mindanao, data from the police regional headquarters said.

Senior Inspector Benjamin Mauricio, chief of the information office of the Central Mindanao, said there are about 13,000 gun licenses that have expired as of September 2012.

Residents flee as rival clans clash anew in Maguindanao

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Residents in three villages in Datu Montawal town in Maguindanao province fled to safer areas after rival clans clashed anew in Barangay Poblacion, at around 2 a.m. Friday, a former barangay official said.

Abdul Pandita of Poblacion, Datu Montawal said the displaced families, mostly from villages in Tunggol, Dungguan, and Talapas have sought temporary shelter at Dungguan Elementary School and Ligawasan Elementary School, both in Datu Montawal and situated along the Datu Montawal-Pikit highway.

Public school teacher shot dead in Cotabato

KIDAPAWAN CITY - A 26-year-old public school teacher was shot dead by motorcycle-riding gunmen while he was on his way to his work along the highway in Barangay Bagontapay, M'lang, North Cotabato, around 7:10 a.m. Thursday.

Senior Inspector Rolando Dillera, deputy chief of M'lang police, identified the victim as Shernan Mark Duerme, 26, a teacher at M'lang National High School-Annex in Barangay Lepaga.

Press express concern over threats on Kidapawan journalist

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has joined its affiliate, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), in expressing concern about reports of a threat against a journalist here.

Reports reaching NUJP said that a texter, who identified himself as a member of the Bagani, was tasked to “silence” Joy Francisco, publisher and editor-in-chief of Southern Voice Journal (SVJ), a weekly tabloid based in the city.

P200,000 for info on vice mayor killers

KIDAPAWAN CITY - Local officials in Kabacan town in North Cotabato offered a P200,000-cash reward to those who can provide information that will lead to the arrest of the killers of Vice Mayor Pol Dulay.

In a resolution, members of the Municipal Council of Kabacan approved on Monday the release of the said reward money.

Village chief survives ambush, 2 escorts killed

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Two escorts of a village chief in Banisilan, North Cotabato were killed when suspected members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) ambushed them on Tuesday, a police official said. Cotabato Provincial Director Danny Peralta identified the fatalities as Takanda Mamukao and Muslimin Ampuan -- both escorts of Sonny Kadil, village chief of Barangay Pantar, Banisilan, North Cotabato.
