Mike T. Limpag

Michael “Mike” Limpag’s passion for sports started at age 12, when he joined his first sports writing contest. Since then, his “crazy dream” was to be a sports columnist.

His wish was an arm’s length away when, after an enrollment glitch left him with plenty of free time during college, he snagged a job as a sports correspondent at The Freeman in August 1997. He later joined Sun.Star Cebu in 2000 but left in 2001.

In 2004, he reprised his post as Sun.Star sports correspondent while completing his AB Sociology studies at the University of San Carlos. From 2007 till today, he is the editor of Sun.Star Sports.

“When the barnyard dung hits the ceiling in the news, people go to the sports pages to look for positive news stories,” the 29-year-old says of the service the section offers.

But then again, covering games does not always go swimmingly well. As of his latest count, he’s had three strikes of bloopers: being mistaken as a caddy and waiter in separate golf tournaments, and as a driver in a Manila tournament.

The football matches in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games, though, evoke memories of the good kind. Mike recalls having a blast at Bacolod City, cheering his heart out for the Philippine team while wearing face paint.

The three items on his wish list, in order of importance are: interview Maria Sharapova; cover a World Cup finals match; and write about RP’s first Olympic gold medal. He has yet to check any of the items.
