13 fire victims laid to rest



SEVERAL friends, family and some politicians in Bacolod joined Thursday the burial of the 13 cadavers killed in last Monday blaze in Barangay 19, at Bacolod, Barangay Handumanan, and Victorias City cemetery.

Out of 17 persons were killed in the blaze in said area, 13 cadavers were laid to rest yesterday in separate cemeteries in the City of Bacolod where Lenneth Amilda 22 years old were buried in Bacolod Public cemetery. Novie Chavez, 12; Bee G Chavez, 6; Eduardo Abajero, 70; Napoleon Abajero, 40: Jolito Carbajosa, 28; Annavic Celiz, 26; Carl Joshua Celiz, 3; Ada Pauline Celiz, 6; and Analyn Celiz, 7 years old are all buried in Barangay Handuman Public cemetery, and the Demandar family were buried in Victorias City cemetery namely Junefer 45 years old; Jonalyn, and Joshua, 11.

While the interment of Niño family were scheduled on Saturday at the Rolling Hills Memorial Park, namely Josephine, 42; Junelyn, 14; Ruel, 13; and the 11 months old Rosemarie.

Roel Chavez, the father of Novie and Bee G, said since he had lost his children, he also lost his eagerness to continue his work as public utility jeepney driver in the city.

Chavez was very thankful to the city government, especially to City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Bacolod Representative Monico Puentevella and the people who helped and joined the burial of his children and some victims of the tragedy.

Leonardia said the City Government sympathized to the family of the victims, hoping that the affected family would accept it in order to move on their lives.

He said the City Government has a counseling program for the families of the victims were it would be continue until it's necessary for them.

Leonardia added it is an individual approach to the affected family, noting the City Government has a psychologist, a doctor to cope up such situation in said area. " Even though they have lost their houses, it's also important to consider the psychological aspect, we have to recover the sooner the better."

Leonardia also lauded the members of the City Council, and the people of Bacolod in helping and giving donations to the victims of the tragedy, and also the private sector, Negros Occidental Filipino Chinese Foundation, who gave the caskets for the victims.

Puentevella in the meantime said, " let us all pray that all the affected families could stand and move on, this is a wake-up call for the Bacolonon were 17 persons were killed, 80 families are affected and 62 houses were damaged in said tragedy."

The solon said it has a lot of congested areas in the City of Bacolod, especially in the downtown area that has no fire hydrant, citing that during the fire incident the firefighters were lack of waters for stopping the fire, and also it's hard for them to penetrate inside the area were it has a very small passage way going in and out in said area.

Puentevella noted Bacolod City should have a master plan for the congested areas in the city, " the respective area should have a passage way for the fire trucks or any vehicles that could maneuver inside the area in case of emergency."

He said in allowing squatter areas, it should have passage way would be recommended were it is already a wake-up call for the people of Bacolod.

The solon lauded the people of Bacolod who helped the family of the victims, noting that the donations were continues coming in for the needs of the fire victims. "Everything is being done by the Bacolodnon, we can overcome all of this by ourselves where the heart of Bacolod people is really something else that should be praise of."

Puentevella also lauded the tri-media, fire fighters, the donors, barangay officials, Department of Social Service and Development (DSSD) local and national among others.

Meanwhile, Councilor Roberto Rojas yesterday said the City Council had passed a resolution requesting all the barangay captains in the City of Bacolod to review and look into the exit and entrance of the respective barangays to allow the ambulance, fire trucks and other transportations to enter in respective area for emergency cases. The proposed resolution was authored by councilor Celia Flor.
