All set for 3rd SJI Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup

IT'S all systems go for the St. John's Institute 3rd Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup that will open July 24 at the Msgr. John Liu Activities Center.

Twelve teams, grouped into two brackets, have confirmed their participation in the tournament.

In Wednesday's drawing of lots, Bracket A will be composed of defending champion Batch 99/2000, first runner-up Jollibee-90/91/92, inaugural champion Queen of Peace Parish, 96/97/98, Batch 2009 and SJI Juniors Varsity team.

Bracket B, on the other hand is composed of the Legends (Batch 89 and earlier), 2003/04/05/06, 2001/02, 2006/07/08, 93/94/95, and SJI Milo Team (15 under).

Except for QPP and Batch 2009, the 10 other teams have already submitted their 15 to 20 players' lineup.

After a short parade by the basketball and volleyball teams at 2:30 p.m., SJI principal Fr. Emil AscaƱo and Alumni Assn. president Odette Ong Gomez will give their welcome address during the opening ceremony.

Batch 90/91/92 will face 99/2k in the curtain raiser followed by the SJI Milo Team against 2006/07/08 in the second game, and the Juniors and Batch 2009 for the final match of the day.

The Juniors and Milo teams were invited to join to give the students the much needed exposure for their upcoming tournaments.

Two games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 6:30 p.m. while there will be three games on Saturdays starting at 3 p.m.

The tournament is organized by the SJI ALumni Association and will be officiated by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Referee group headed by Felipe Bat-og.

Tournament commissioner is Ireneo Morales.
