Consumer welfare month to focus on food sufficiency-A A +A
Tuesday, September 27, 2011
THIS year’s Consumer Welfare Month from October 4-6, 2011 will be led by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and will highlight the continuing program on food self-sufficiency.
With the theme ‘Sapat, Ligtas at Abot-kayang Pagkain para sa Lahat,’ the event is observed each October under Presidential Proclamation 1098 issued in 1997.
It is initiated by the National Consumer Affairs Council, created as per Republic Act 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines “to improve the management, coordination and effectiveness of consumer programs of various government agencies.”
It aims to instill consumer consciousness on food quality and food safety; to present government consumer programs; to make consumers aware of their basic rights; to advocate Consumer and Price Acts; and to consolidate issues or concerns affecting consumers.
Activities this year include a formal opening ceremony, put up of exhibits and selling booths, the conduct of a series of seminars, and the holding of month-long consumer-related activities in the different regional field units, bureaus and attached agencies of the DA.
Partner-agencies include the departments of Trade and Industry, Health, Education, Environment and Natural Resources, Energy and the Transportation and Communication as well as representatives of consumer organizations and the business and industry sectors. (Cheryl G. Cruz)
