SMB marks 4th year of ‘Trees Brew Life’-A A +A

BEER market leader San Miguel Brewery Inc. culminated its month-long nationwide tree-planting project in Barangay Estefania, Bacolod City last Saturday with its multi-sectoral partners led by Mayor Monico Puentevella.
The "Buhayin ang Kalikasan" program dubbed as "Trees Brew Life" is now on its fourth year. The ceremonial kickoff was held in San Mateo, Rizal on August 3 with company president Roberto Huang leading employees from the national office, Polo Brewery, and GMA North and South areas.
SMB employees and partners from various installations in the country also planted trees in Tayak hills, Laguna; Barangay Matina Pangi in Davao City; and Barangay Tawason, Mandaue City.
For the Bacolod leg, SMB is joined by the Bacolod City Government, City Environment Office, barangay councils of Estefania and Granada, Negros Press Club, Purok Patricia Homes Council, Rotary Club of Bacolod Central, Police Station 5, and the Bureau of Fire Protection of Granada Sub-fire Station.
"This year, we will continue to expand the program by revisiting areas where we have already conducted planting activities, and undertake pocket environmental initiatives with our dependents and other program partners throughout the year," Huang said.
He said the company aims to double the number of trees planted by 2015.
Since its inception in 2010, the company has planted more than 150,000 samplings of hardwood, mangrove, and fruit-bearing trees in Cagayan Valley, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, Camarines Sur, Tacloban and Iloilo on top of customary regions where the company's facilities are located.
"While we step up and make our social responsibility efforts much more effective, we trust that our company's greater purpose in doing good and giving back is doing the right thing today, so that the future generation will have a better life and a sustainable future," said Huang.
Inspired by the corporation's mother company, San Miguel Corporation, SMB's corporate social responsibility initiatives have adopted the holistic approach by focusing on Education, Enterprise, Health and Basic Services and the environment with the ultimate objective of developing self reliant and vibrant communities.
The Buhayin ang Kalikasan flagship environmental program remains to be a top priority in SMB's social development agenda.
Co-implemented with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and local government units, and in partnership with non-government organizations, people's organizations, civic associations, business groups, media partners and surrounding communities, SMB aspires to be able to contribute in ensuring the availability of water supply by protecting, preserving, and rehabilitating selected forest covers, regeneration of mangrove areas and propagation of planting materials for an eco-friendly environment.
Likewise, the company aims to help in the reforestation, increasing mangrove density, nursery development, capability-building, and conduct of a sustained environmental information drive.
SMB's participation in this environmental program is in support of the National Greening Program of President Benigno Aquino III and the DENR.
Puentevella lauded the initiative of SMB, and hopes that other commercial firms will also follow what the firm has started insofar as helping the preservation and protection of the environment. (CNC)
