NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said the province is interested in the program of the Department of Energy (DOE) to provide capital through loans to those who will put up gasoline stations.

He also encouraged those who are planning to put a gasoline station to avail of the program.

Third District Rep. Alfredo Benitez bared that the DOE has a total budget of P10 million for such program to encourage more competition in the oil industry.

"We may avail if they extend the program through a loan," Marañon said.

He bared that the province in fact has been looking for a place to put up a gasoline station that would only cater to the vehicles of the province.

The putting up of a gasoline station would need an ordinance, the governor said.

He said it would depend on the ordinance if private vehicles will also be allowed to gas up at the province’s gasoline station, but he clarified that the government does not compete with the private sector and only serves as catalyst in certain situation.

Moreover, Benitez said that Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla disclosed during their the plan of extending loans to those interested to put up a gasoline station like non-government organizations, individuals, cooperatives and local government units to address the discrepancy in fuel prices.

The scheme is one way of bringing in more competition, he added.
