Green economic development pushed among repair service enterprises

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Negros Occidental is urging repair service enterprises in the province to practice green economic development (GED).

rade and industry development specialist Jonathan Tejida, during the two-day seminar on “Pro-GED” held at the Negros First Negosyo Center in Bacolod City until yesterday, said one of the programs pushed by the DTI is energy conservation.

Tejida said they are introducing different technologies by which repair service enterprises can conserve energy consumption through saving electricity, fuel, light, and water.

The seminar was attended by about 30 repair participants comprised of car dealers, machines shops, airconditioning and refrigeration service enterprises, electronics and computer service providers in the province, mostly from Bacolod City.

DTI showed to them examples of best practices on energy conservation being implemented by various companies.

“We aimed to inspire our local service enterprises to be aware of environmental issues especially the pressing climate change,” Tejida said, adding that aside from helping in the protection and conservation of environment, practicing GED is also beneficial to business.

Tejida said that conserving electricity would translate to savings.

“We are urging them to implement some measures like having enough ventilation and appropriate sealing in their respective workplaces so that they can lessen electricity usage. They are also advised to utilize water tanks for storing rain waters for water conservation purposes,” he said.

Tejida added that at present, many service enterprises are already practicing pro-GED measures, without realizing its importance and impact to the environment.

Meanwhile, participants were also given a workshop on “Worker’s Occupational Safety and Health” by the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole).

They were given an overview on having safety and hazardless production areas through registration, regulations and law compliance.

Many machine shops, where tools and spare parts are scattered, are really posing danger among workers thus, management should be informed and be reminded of their obligations to the health and safety of the employees, Tejida said.
