DOT: Negros Trade Fair a tourism boost

Wednesday, September 20, 2017

THE upcoming 32nd Negros Trade Fair is seen to also boost the tourism industry of Negros Occidental.

Department of Tourism (DOT)-Western Visayas Regional Administrative Officer Artemio Ticar, designated tourism area development head for Negros Occidental, yesterday said the trade fair is a platform in showcasing the province as one of the country's top tourism destinations.

Ticar said the food products offered by local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) promote the province's rich culinary tourism.

Other commodities under gifts, décor, and homestyle, fashion and garments, furniture and furnishing, natural and organic sectors also form part of the components of tourism packages offered by the province to domestic and foreign tourists.

“The Negros Trade Fair, which gathers thousands of visitors, is a potential venue to showcase and promote our vast tourism offerings,” Ticar said, adding the DOT has been supporting the event every year.

The DOT and Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) recently reported that Negros Occidental is the second most visited place in the country by domestic travelers.

Also for 2016, the province ranked second in terms of number of tourist arrivals in Western Visayas, at 1.65 million.

Negros Occidental is also among the familiarization and post-event tour destinations in Western Visayas along with Iloilo.

Aside from boosting Negrense MSMEs, the trade fair will further capture the interest especially of potential visitors to explore Negros Occidental as a destination capable of catering to tourists, Ticar said.

“People visiting the trade fair, through word of mouth and social media, will surely contribute to increased awareness about the province and its rich tourism offerings,” he added.

This year’s event to be held at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City on September 27 to October 1 is themed “Food for Thought” with tagline “Feast your Eyes, Fill your Heart, and Feed your Soul.”

The five-day trade fair gathers at least 80 local entrepreneurs who will offer products that are "something new" to the market.

The Association of Negros Producers earlier said that with better and more innovative products they are optimistic to surpass last year's generated sales of P20 million.
